WHEN A TOOTH NEEDS TO COME OUT
Sometimes a tooth is too damaged or decayed to be saved with a filling or crown. Extraction removes the tooth to stop pain, prevent infection from spreading, and protect your overall oral health. We make the process as comfortable as possible.
Patients from South West Rocks, Kempsey, Coffs Harbour, and throughout the Mid North Coast appreciate our gentle approach and clear communication here at South West Rocks Dental throughout the extraction process.
WHAT TOOTH EXTRACTION HELPS WITH
SEVERE DECAY OR DAMAGE
When a tooth is badly decayed or broken beyond repair, extraction can help stop the pain and aims to prevent infection from affecting neighbouring teeth or spreading into your jawbone. Removing the damaged tooth can help protect your overall health.
INFECTION THAT CAN'T BE TREATED
Some tooth infections don’t respond to root canal treatment or antibiotics. In these cases, extraction removes the source of infection and aims to prevent it from causing more serious health problems elsewhere in your body.
OVERCROWDING OR PREPARATION FOR TREATMENT
Sometimes teeth need to be removed to make space for orthodontic treatment or because there simply isn’t enough room in your jaw. Extraction can help create the space needed for proper alignment or other dental work.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING YOUR TOOTH EXTRACTION
THOROUGH ASSESSMENT AND PLANNING
We examine the tooth and surrounding area, often using X-rays to understand the root structure.
LOCAL ANAESTHETIC
We numb the area completely so you won’t feel pain during the extraction, only pressure.
GENTLE REMOVAL
We carefully loosen and remove the tooth, working to keep the process as quick and comfortable as possible.
AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS
We’ll give you clear guidance on managing healing, including what to eat and how to care for the area.

FAQ's: Tooth Extraction
Will the extraction hurt?
You shouldn’t feel pain during the extraction because of local anaesthetic. You’ll feel pressure and movement as we loosen and remove the tooth, but not pain. After the anaesthetic wears off, you’ll have some discomfort that can be managed with pain medication.
Most people describe the discomfort as similar to having had a filling. If you’re anxious about the procedure, let us know. We can discuss options to help you feel more comfortable and relaxed.
How long does it take to heal?
The extraction site typically takes 1 to 2 weeks to heal enough that you can return to normal eating. Complete healing of the bone and soft tissue takes several weeks to a few months, but you won’t notice this happening.
You’ll probably feel back to normal within 3 to 5 days for a simple extraction. Surgical extractions or multiple teeth may take a bit longer. We’ll let you know what to expect based on your specific situation.
What are my options for replacing the tooth?
After extraction, you have several options for replacing the missing tooth including dental implants, bridges, or partial dentures. Not all teeth need to be replaced, particularly some back molars, but we’ll discuss your options based on which tooth was removed.
Replacing missing teeth can help maintain your bite, prevent neighbouring teeth from shifting, and restore your ability to chew comfortably. We’ll talk through the pros and cons of each option so you can make the best choice.
