WHAT FILLINGS CAN HELP WITH
TOOTH DECAY AND CAVITIES
Cavities form when bacteria and acid break down your tooth enamel. Left untreated, decay spreads deeper into the tooth and can cause pain or infection. Fillings remove the decay and seal the tooth, stopping the damage and restoring its strength.
CHIPS AND MINOR DAMAGE
Small chips or cracks from accidents or wear can weaken your tooth and let bacteria in. Fillings can repair this damage, restore the tooth’s shape, and prevent bigger problems down the track.
WORN OR FAILING OLD FILLINGS
Old metal fillings can crack, leak, or wear down over time, leaving your tooth vulnerable to new decay. Replacing them with modern white fillings protects your tooth and gives you a more natural appearance.

FAQ's: Dental Fillings
How long do white fillings last?
White composite fillings typically last between 5 to 10 years, depending on where they are in your mouth, how large they are, and how well you look after them. Fillings on back teeth that handle more chewing pressure might wear faster than front teeth.
Good oral hygiene and regular checkups help your fillings last as long as possible. We’ll keep an eye on your fillings at each visit and let you know if any need replacing.
Will I feel pain during the filling procedure?
We use local anaesthetic to numb the area completely, so you shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure. You’ll feel pressure and movement, but not sharp pain. The numbing injection itself might sting briefly, but that passes quickly.
After the anaesthetic wears off, your tooth might feel sensitive for a day or two. This is normal and usually settles on its own. If you experience ongoing pain or sensitivity, give us a call.
Can I eat straight after getting a filling?
You can eat as soon as the numbness wears off, usually within two to three hours. While your mouth is numb, it’s best to avoid eating because you might accidentally bite your cheek or tongue without realising.
Your tooth might feel slightly sensitive to hot, cold, or pressure for a few days after the filling. This is normal. Stick to softer foods if you’re experiencing sensitivity, and it should settle down within a week.
