WHAT CHILDREN'S FILLINGS HELP WITH
TREATING CAVITIES IN BABY TEETH
Baby teeth are important for eating, speaking, and holding space for permanent teeth. Cavities in baby teeth need treatment even though these teeth will eventually fall out. Untreated decay can cause pain, infection, and may affect the developing permanent teeth underneath.
REPAIRING DECAY IN PERMANENT TEETH
When permanent teeth develop cavities, early treatment helps preserve as much natural tooth structure as possible. Treating decay promptly aims to prevent it from reaching deeper layers of the tooth, which could require more extensive treatment.
PREVENTING PAIN AND INFECTION
Cavities can cause toothache, sensitivity, and infection if left untreated. Fillings remove the decay and seal the tooth, aiming to relieve discomfort and prevent the cavity from getting worse or causing more serious problems.

FAQ's: Children’s Fillings
Do baby teeth really need fillings?
Yes, baby teeth serve important functions and need treatment when they develop cavities. They help children chew food properly, develop clear speech, and hold space for permanent teeth. Cavities in baby teeth can cause pain and infection, and if left untreated, may affect the permanent teeth developing underneath.
Baby teeth don’t fall out as quickly as many parents think. Back baby teeth often aren’t lost until age 10 to 12, so cavities can cause years of problems if not treated. Treating decay early is usually simpler and less invasive than waiting until it becomes a bigger problem.
Will the filling hurt my child?
We use local anaesthetic to numb the area completely, so your child shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure. They’ll feel pressure and movement, but not sharp pain. We explain everything in gentle, child-friendly language and go at a pace that keeps them comfortable.
After the anaesthetic wears off, the tooth might feel sensitive for a day or two, but this usually settles quickly. Many children cope very well with fillings, especially when we take time to build trust and explain what’s happening.
How can I prevent my child from getting cavities?
Good oral hygiene, healthy eating habits, and regular dental check-ups are the best ways to help prevent cavities. Children should brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss once daily with parent supervision until they’re around 10 years old.
Limiting sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals, makes a big difference. Regular dental visits every six months allow us to spot early decay, apply fluoride and sealants for protection, and teach your child good oral care habits. Starting these habits early gives children the best chance of maintaining healthy teeth.
