FAQ's: Kids’ Dental Check-ups
When should my child have their first dental visit?
We recommend bringing your child for their first dental visit around their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing. These early visits are gentle introductions that help your child become familiar with the dental environment.
Early visits also allow us to check that teeth are developing normally, discuss teething concerns, and provide guidance on oral care for babies and toddlers. Starting early helps establish good habits and makes future visits easier.
How often should children have dental check-ups?
Most children benefit from dental check-ups every six months. However, some children may need more frequent visits if they’re at higher risk for cavities, have orthodontic concerns, or need closer monitoring of oral development.
Regular six-monthly visits help us catch problems early, provide preventative care like fluoride and sealants, and monitor how teeth and jaws are developing. We’ll recommend an appropriate schedule based on your child’s individual needs.
What if my child is nervous about the dentist?
Many children feel nervous about dental visits, especially their first few appointments. We specialise in helping anxious children feel comfortable and safe. We use gentle, child-friendly language, go at your child’s pace, and never force treatment.
You’re welcome to stay with your child during their appointment for reassurance. We also use positive reinforcement and make visits as fun and stress-free as possible. Building trust takes time, and we’re patient. Starting visits early, before problems develop, helps children learn that dental visits are routine and nothing to fear.
CHILD DENTAL BENEFITS SCHEDULE
Eligible children aged 2 to 17 can receive up to $1,095 in benefits over two calendar years for basic dental services under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule. We bulk bill for eligible children under the CDBS, which means no out-of-pocket costs for covered services.
Services covered include check-ups, cleaning, X-rays, fillings, fissure sealants, and extractions. We’ll check your child’s eligibility and help you access these benefits to make dental care more affordable.
