Root canal therapy has a quiet reputation it does not deserve, and with modern technique and the right care, it is one of the more predictable treatments in dentistry.

What Actually Makes a Root Canal Last
There are three things that decide whether a root canal lasts five years or twenty five, and they are all things worth asking about.
The first is diagnosis. Not every aching tooth needs a root canal, and not every root canal needs to be done today. We use 3D imaging and a careful clinical assessment to understand what is happening inside the tooth and the bone around it. Sometimes a root canal is the right call. Sometimes a tooth is past saving, and an honest conversation about replacement is kinder than a procedure that will not hold. We will tell you what we see, gently, before any treatment begins.
The second is technique. A root canal is detailed, unhurried work. Fine instruments, magnification, thorough irrigation. It is not glamorous, but it is the reason a treated tooth can last for decades when it is done with care.
The third is what happens after the root canal. A tooth that has had a root canal is more brittle than a healthy one, and most of the time it needs a crown to protect it. The crown is not a separate sales pitch. It is part of the same job.
Why the Crown Matters
This is the part that often gets skimmed over, so we will sit on it for a moment.
Once a tooth has had its nerve removed, it loses much of the structural strength it used to have. A well fitted crown wraps the remaining tooth, restores the bite, and lets you chew normally without worrying about cracking it on something hard. Without that protection, a root canalled tooth can split, and a split tooth is usually not repairable.
Patients sometimes ask whether the crown is essential. We always answer honestly. On a back tooth doing real chewing work, we would not recommend skipping it. Saving a tooth is a meaningful investment of your time and money, and the crown is the part that protects that investment.
One Tooth Is Rarely the Whole Story
