CBCT

South West Rocks Family Dental has been proudly serving the South West Rocks and Kempsey Shire for over 30 years.

CBCT

3D X-Rays right here in South West Rocks. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), a specialised diagnostic imaging technology used in dentistry to capture high-resolution 3D images of the teeth, jawbone, and surrounding structures. We use this critical tool for complex diagnosis, pathology investigation, implant planning and other advanced situations allowing you to have the care you need closer to home.

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is a specialised diagnostic imaging technology used in dentistry to capture high-resolution 3D images of the teeth, jawbone, and surrounding structures. This technology allows us to view detailed images of the oral structures, enabling us to provide accurate diagnosis and plan for optimal treatment outcomes. Here are some key aspects of CBCT:

How CBCT works: CBCT uses a cone-shaped x-ray beam and a specialised scanner to capture multiple images of the mouth from different angles. These images are then reconstructed into a 3D model of the teeth, jawbone, and surrounding structures.

Uses of CBCT: CBCT is used when 2D (OPG) radiography is not enough. This allows us to assess and diagnose various dental and oral conditions, such as impacted teeth, bone loss, gum disease, cysts, tumours, and jaw abnormalities. CBCT is also used for dental implant planning and orthodontic treatment planning.

Why assess wisdom teeth: Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to emerge in the mouth, and often cause issues due to insufficient space in the mouth. Assessment with CBCT helps our team assess the difficulty for removal as well as how close they are to your nerves for blood vessels, improving the safety and speed of removal.

Benefits of CBCT: CBCT provides high-resolution 3D images of the oral structures, making it an efficient and effective diagnostic tool. It also exposes patients to a lower radiation dose compared to medical CT scans.

CBCT process: The CBCT process is quick and painless. Patients are asked to stand still while the scanner rotates around their head, capturing the images.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

Detailed Imaging: CBCT provides high-resolution 3D images of the oral structures, making it an efficient and effective diagnostic tool.

Accurate Diagnosis: The detailed imaging provided by CBCT enables dental professionals to provide accurate diagnosis and plan for optimal treatment outcomes.

Lower Radiation Exposure: CBCT exposes patients to a lower radiation dose compared to medical CT scans.

Non-Invasive: CBCT is a non-invasive procedure that does not require any injections or incisions.

Easy to Use: The CBCT process is quick and easy, making it a convenient diagnostic tool for both patients and dental professionals.

Cons:

Cost: CBCT is more expensive compared to other types of dental x-rays or imaging technologies. There is a surcharge of $92 in our Capped Price Care due to the vastly increased reporting time.

Not Suitable for All Patients: CBCT may not be suitable for all patients, such as pregnant women.

FAQ's: CBCT

CBCT is a specialized diagnostic imaging technology used in dentistry to capture high-resolution 3D images of the teeth, jawbone, and surrounding structures.

CBCT may be recommended for specific dental issues that cannot be fully diagnosed with traditional 2D dental x-rays or other imaging technologies. It is also used for dental implant planning and orthodontic treatment planning.

No, CBCT is a painless procedure. Patients are asked to sit or stand still while the scanner rotates around their head, capturing the images.

The CBCT process is quick and usually takes around 15 seconds and a few minutes to load.

While OPG radiographs are taken every 5 years, CBCTs are only taken as needed for diagnostic or planning reasons.

Yes, CBCT exposes patients to a lower radiation dose compared to medical CT scans.

Yes, children can have CBCT if it is necessary for their dental treatment or assessment. However, the dental professional will take special care to ensure the radiation dose is appropriate for the child’s age and size.

While CBCT is generally safe, there is a small risk of exposure to radiation. However, dental professionals take precautions to ensure the radiation dose is appropriate for each patient’s individual needs.
